A parasympathetic ganglion in the upper part of the pterygopalatine fossa.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Todd's Cyclopaedia of Anatomy and Physiology. From the genitive of the name of Johann Friedrich Meckel the elder, German anatomist + ganglion, after scientific Latin ganglion Meckelii, German Meckel'schen Knoten, or French ganglion de Meckel.
