A deprecated adherence to and regard for the traditions and values of the past, especially in the arts. Chiefly opposed to futurism.
Origin
1940s; earliest use found in Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957), artist and writer. From French passéisme from passé the past + -isme, after Italian passatismo (F. T. Marinetti et al. Contro Venezia Passatista in Manifesti del Futurismo 32).
