  • The legislation was passed principally as a protectionist measure to foster the development of U.S. industries. As well as the imposition of high duties, the legislation also made provision for reciprocal tariff treaties to secure markets for U.S. products abroad..

Origin

Late 19th century; earliest use found in The New Englander. From the name of William McKinley, U.S. Republican politician, Governor of Ohio, and U.S. President, who sponsored the legislation + tariff.
