Origin

Mid 19th century. From Italian canaiolo (1779 or earlier; 1763 or earlier as Canajolo and (more fully) Canajolo nero; also canaiuolo), ultimately from cane dog + -olo, -uolo, perhaps with allusion to a supposed preference shown by dogs for the sweet taste of this grape variety.
