(born 1940), South African novelist; full name John Maxwell Coetzee. He won the Booker Prize with Life and Times of Michael K (1983) and Disgrace (1999), becoming the first author to win the prize twice, and in 2003 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Other notable works: In the Heart of the Country (1977), White Writing (1988), and Age of Iron (1990).
