(1688–1766), son of James II (James VII of Scotland), pretender to the British throne; known as the Old Pretender; full name James Francis Edward Stuart. He arrived in Scotland too late to alter the outcome of the 1715 Jacobite uprising and left the leadership of the 1745–6 uprising to his son Charles Edward Stuart.
