A port on the Black Sea in northern Turkey; population 228,800 (est. 2007). In 1204, after the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders, an offshoot of the Byzantine Empire was founded with Trabzon as its capital, which was annexed to the Ottoman Empire in 1461.
