(1692–1770), Scottish mathematician. His main work, Methodus Differentialis (1730), was concerned with summation and interpolation. A formula named after him, giving the approximate value of the factorial of large numbers, was actually first worked out by the French-born mathematician Abraham de Moivre (1667–1754).
