From Italian ruvido rough, uneven, rugged, uncivilized, ill-mannered, probably from classical Latin or post-classical Latin rugidus creased, wrinkly (in an isolated undated inscription on a terracotta vessel found in Sarajevo, Bosnia, as rugetus; from rūga wrinkle + -idus).
