A professor at Harvard University 1946–61 and advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, he wrote The Age of Jackson (1945), The Age of Roosevelt in three volumes (1957–60), A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House (1965), and The Imperial Presidency (1973).
