Late 17th century; earliest use found in John Locke (1632–1704), philosopher. From post-classical Latin ptyalismus from ancient Greek πτυαλισμός salivation from πτυαλίζειν to salivate (from πτύαλον spittle, saliva + -ίζειν) + -ισμός.
