Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From Anglo-Norman and Middle French prevost, French prévôt denoting various kinds of magistrate, civil officer, or judge, head of a cathedral or collegiate church, judge of a court dealing with legal cases which concern non-privileged inhabitants from classical Latin praepositus person placed in charge.
