1A river of south-eastern Africa. Rising as the Crocodile River near Johannesburg, it flows 1,770 km (1,100 miles) in a sweeping curve to the north and east to meet the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, north of Maputo. For much of its course it forms South Africa's boundary with Botswana and Zimbabwe.
2A province of northern South Africa, formerly part of Transvaal; capital Polokwane. It was known as the Northern Province until 2002.
