Late 15th century; earliest use found in Hymnal. From Middle French propiciable, propitiable merciful and its etymon classical Latin propitiābilis able to be appeased, in post-classical Latin also able to propitiate (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; from propitiāre + -bilis).
