Late 16th century. From post-classical Latin procatalepsis rhetorical figure by which an opponent's objections are anticipated and answered from ancient Greek προκατάληψις, lit. ‘seizing in advance’ from προ- + κατάληψις seizing, after προκαταλαμβάνειν to seize beforehand, to anticipate.
