Late 15th century (in an earlier sense). From Anglo-Norman and Middle French affectuel ardent, eager and its etymon post-classical Latin affectualis concerned with or appealing to the emotions, heart-stirring from classical Latin affectus + -ālis. Apparently re-formed in 20th cent. from classical Latin affectus affect + -al. Compare earlier affectually.
