Hopkins, Gerard Manley

(1844–89), English poet. Becoming a Jesuit in 1868, he wrote little poetry until 1876, when a shipwreck inspired him to write ‘The Wreck of the Deutschland’. Like his poems ‘Windhover’ and ‘Pied Beauty’ (both 1877), it makes use of Hopkins's ‘sprung rhythm’ technique.
