A city in north-western Poland; population 564,035 (2007). An area of German colonization since the 13th century, it was the centre of Polish power in the 15th–17th centuries, but passed to Prussia in 1793. It was under German control almost continuously until the First World War, and was overrun by the Germans again in 1939.
