Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Alta California (San Francisco). From Spanish póngale put it (sc. the money) down from ponga, 3rd person present subjunctive of poner to put, to place, to wager, to bet + le, 3rd person singular direct object pronoun (now nonstandard with reference to non-human objects: see note).
