The capital of Guatemala; population 1,090,000 (est. 2009). Situated at an altitude of 1,500 m (4,920 ft) in the central highlands, the city was founded in 1776 to replace the former capital, Antigua Guatemala, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1773.
