Late 18th century; earliest use found in Charles Burney (1726–1814), musician and author. From Italian accordatura fact of being tuned in a certain way from accordare to tune (an instrument) (end of the 13th cent.; specific sense development of accordare to be in harmony, to cause (something) to be in harmony with (something else) + -atura.
