Aschoff, Karl Albert Ludwig

 

Born Jan. 10, 1866, in Berlin; died June 24, 1942, in Freiburg. German pathologist, professor at the universities of Marburg (beginning in 1903) and Freiburg (1906–36).

Of major interest are Aschoff’s studies of the arterioven-tricular connective system of the heart, which revealed a uniquely differentiated muscular bundle (the so-called Aschoff-Tavar bundle) at the base of the partition of the auricles; his studies of the pathological anatomy of rheumatic myocarditis revealing accumulations of cells (Aschoff nodules) that are characteristic of this disease; and his studies of the pathogenesis of tuberculosis, gallstone disease, ulcers of the stomach and the duodenum, and so on.
