Barysh
city, the center of Barysh Raion, Ul’ianovsk Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the Barysh River (in the Volga basin). The city has a railroad station on the Inza-Syzran’ line, 114 km southwest of Ul’ianovsk. Population, 19,000 (1967). There are cloth (since 1826), clothing, and paper factories; the Reduktor Plant; and food and wood processing industries. There is also an evening textile technicum. Barysh was formed into a city in 1954 from the settlements of Barysh and Gur’evka.

a river in Ul’ianovsk Oblast, RSFSR; right tributary of the Sura River. Length, 247 km. Area of river basin, 5,800 sq km. It flows through the Volga elevation and is fed mainly by snow and rain. The Barysh freezes in November and melts in April. It is not navigable. The city Barysh is on the Barysh River.
