Iakovlev, Aleksei Ivanovich

Born Dec. 18 (30), 1878, in Simbirsk, now Ulianovsk; died July 30, 1951, in Moscow. Soviet historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929). Son of I. Ia. Iakovlev.

A. I. Iakovlev graduated from the Simbirsk Gymnasium in 1896 and from the faculty of history and philology of Moscow University in 1900. A student of V. O. Kliuchevskii’s, he taught at various higher educational institutions in Moscow. He was a member of the Institute of History of the Russian Association of Scientific Research Institutes of Social Sciences from 1922 to 1930 and became a senior research worker at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1938.

Iakovlev’s works deal primarily with social thought in 17th-century Russia and the socioeconomic and military-political history of the period. They include Abatis Lines in the Muscovite State in the 17th Century (1916; master’s dissertation) and The Recruitment Office (1917; doctoral dissertation).

In 1943, Iakovlev received the State Prize of the USSR fo. Servitude and Serfs in the Muscovite State in the 17th Century (1943). Iakovlev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
