Synonym(s): hematocytoblast, hemoblast [hemo- + G. kytos, cell, + blastos, germ] he·mo·cy·to·blast (hē'mō-sī'tō-blast) A blood cell derived from embryonic mesenchyme, characterized by basophilic cytoplasm and a relatively large nucleus with a spongy, loose network of chromatin and several nucleoli; mitochondria are extremely fine and delicate. Hemocytoblasts represent the primordial stem cells of the monophyletic theory of the origin of blood and can develop into erythroblasts, young forms of the granulocytic series; and megakaryocytes.
