Bespalyi, Ivan
Bespalyi, Ivan
Died 1718. Hetman of the Ukrainian rebels who fought in 1658 with Russian troops led by the voevoda (military commander)G. G. Romodanovskii against the hetmán I. Vygovskii, who had betrayed the Ukraine and Russia.
The cossacks who had remained loyal to Russia elected Bespalyi as their mandated hetman at Varva in November 1658. However, at the Pereiaslav Rada (a legislative assembly held from September through October 1659) Iurii Khmel’nitskii was elected hetman and Bespalyi became military judge. There is no information about Bespalyi’s later activities. At the beginning of the 18th century he took monastic vows.
