Glavnyi, or Vodorazdelnyi, Range
Glavnyi, or Vodorazdel’nyi, Range
(Central, or Watershed, Range), a mountain ridge in the Greater Caucasus forming a line joining its most elevated points. It runs from west-northwest to east-southeast and is the watershed for rivers flowing to the north (the river basins of the Kuban’, Terek, Sulak, and so on) and to the south (the river basins of the Kodori, Inguri, Rioni, Kura, and so on). The Glavnyi Range reaches its maximum elevation (Mount Shkhara, 5,058 m) between the Marukha and the Mamison passes in the Central Caucasus and in the eastern part of the Western Caucasus (where maximum glaciation occurs).
