a city in the German Democratic Republic, in the Bezirk (district) of Frankfurt, on the Spree River. Population, 31,000 (1974). Fürstenwalde is a river port and railroad junction. Its machine-building and metalworking industries manufacture equipment for the extraction and refining of natural gas. The city’s chemical industry produces dyes, and its rubber industry produces tires. Fürstenwalde also manufactures textiles, footwear, and wood products.
