German Mounting

(or Fraunhofer mounting), an equatorial telescope mounting in which the polar axis terminates in a frame that supports the declination axis and the telescope. The German mounting is compact and permits the use of tubes that are long but not very heavy. It is used primarily for refractors. One of its disadvantages is that the observation of a celestial body is interrupted when the body crosses the meridian.
