AVID Cardiology (1) Angiography Vs. Intravascular Ultrasound Directed Coronary Stent Placement. A trial comparing IVUS-guided stent placement vs angiography alone in reducing 12-month target lesion revascularization rate; 800 patients. Conclusion IVUS-directed stent placement results in larger stent dimensions without increased complications and with a significantly decreased need for revascularization within 12 months (5% vs 11%). (2) Antiarrhythmics Vs Implantable Defibrillators—Beta-Blocker Substudy. A trial comparing the efficacy of implantable defibrillators, or ICDs (507 patients) vs the best medical therapy, antiarrhythmics (509 patients), for survivors of MI or those with nonsustained ventricular tachycardia on the M&M in patients resuscitated from near-fatal ventricular arrhythmias. Conclusion Fewer deaths occurred with ICDs than with antiarrhythmics; patients treated with defibrillators had better survival throughout the study. In patients with severe symptomatic ventricular arrhythmias, ICDs resulted in a 27–39% reduction in mortality.AVID Cardiology A clinical trial–Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators that compared the effect of implantable defibrillators vs the best medical therapy–antiarrhythmics for survivors of MI or those with nonsustained ventricular tachycardia on the morbidity and mortality in Pts resuscitated from near-fatal ventricular arrhythmias.
