(Laburnum anagyroides), a shrub or small tree (up to 5 m high) of the family Leguminosae. The leaves are ternate on long leaf stalks. The bisexual flowers are yellow and grow in long pendulous racemes. The fruit is a pod with obscure necks. The seeds are colored black. The goldenrain tree grows wild in southern Europe. In the USSR (the southern European USSR, the Caucasus, and Middle Asia) it is cultivated in gardens and parks. It contains cystine, a poisonous alkaloid.
