a specimen of tissue that has been quick-frozen, cut by microtome, and stained immediately for rapid diagnosis of possible malignant lesions. The tissue block is frozen solid with dry ice so that thin slices can be cut, mounted on slides, stained and immediately examined under the microscope. Frozen sections are often called for in the course of an operation for suspected cancer. The result may radically alter the surgical procedure performed.
