Fuwa Tetsuzo

(real name Ueda Kenjiro). Born Jan. 26, 1930, in Tokyo. Active in the Japanese communist movement. Member of the Communist Party of Japan (CPJ) from 1947.

Fuwa’s father worked in the field of education. After graduating in 1953 from the physics division of the department of natural sciences of the University of Tokyo, Fuwa worked in the secretariat of the all-Japan federation of metallurgical trade unions. In 1964 he joined the staff of the CPJ Central Committee (CC CPJ); in the same year he became a candidate member and in 1966 a member of the CC CPJ. In 1970, Fuwa became a member of the presidium of the CC, a member of the presidium’s permanent bureau, and chairman of the secretariat of the CC CPJ. In 1976 he was also named first deputy chairman of the presidium of the CC CPJ. From 1969, Fuwa was a member of the House of Representatives of the Japanese Diet.
