Garonne Canal

 

in France, the western continuation of the Southern Canal, which forms a waterway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It extends from Toulouse along the right bank of the Garonne River to the city of Agen, where it passes through an aqueduct to the left bank and then at the town of Castets joins the Garonne. The canal is about 200 km long, and it has more than 50 locks. The Garonne Canal is used chiefly for transporting farm produce, building materials, and lumber; it has a cargo volume of about 500,000 tons a year.
