Ghazipur

(gä`zēpo͝or'), town (1991 pop. 76,547), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ganges River. A district administrative center, Ghazipur is the headquarters of the Indian government's opium monopoly. There is also handloom weaving and a perfume industry. The town is an important agricultural market. Lord Cornwallis, governor-general of British India, died in Ghazipur and is buried there.
