a river in peninsular India. It is 1,450 km long and drains an area of 290,000 sq km. The Godavari originates on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats, crosses the Dec-can plateau in a deep valley, and empties into the Bay of Bengal, forming a large delta. It has rapids in the upper reaches and as it enters the coastal plain. The river has high levels of water in the summer, when the flow rate during wet years reaches 40,000–60,000 cu m/sec. It is used for irrigation primarily in the lower reaches, irrigating some 4,000 sq km, and is navigable in the middle course and in the delta. Its principal branch is the Gautami Godavari, which is navigable by large vessels. The construction of dams, huge hydroelectric power plants, and irrigation systems is under way. The city of Rajahmundry is located on the Godavari.
