Gargano
Gargano
a peninsula in the southeastern part of Italy, projecting into the Adriatic Sea. Its shores are weakly dissected. On its northern side are two large lakes, Lesina and Varano. Its mountains reach an altitude of 1,056 m (Monte Calvo) and are bordered by narrow lowlands along the sea. The peninsula is made up of Mesozoic dolomite and limestone; karst topography has developed, so that large areas lack any vegetation. To an altitude of 500 to 700 m, the vegetation is chiefly evergreen oak and pine forests, maqui, vineyards, and orchards. Deciduous oak and pine forests are found at higher altitudes. There are deposits of bauxite.
