Georgii Nikolaev

Born Jan. 4 (17), 1903, in Moscow. Soviet scientist; specialist in calculation and design of welded structures. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970); Here of Socialist Labor (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1953.

Nikolaev graduated from the Moscow Institute of Railroad Transport in 1925 and from Moscow University in 1928. From 1925 to 1933 he worked on the Science and Technical Committee of the People’s Commissariat of Railroads. Since 1930 he has taught at the N. E. Bauman Higher Technical School (professor since 1939; rector since 1964).

Nikolaev was the first to determine the basic characteristics of vibrational strength of welded structures and to develop engineering requirements for their design. His works were the scientific basis for universal introduction of welding in the USSR as a replacement for riveting in the erection of industrial buildings and in the production of boilers and railroad cars. He conducted fundamental research on intrinsic stresses and deformations in welded structures. He is the author of papers on the control of residual stresses in welding and on the effect of time on residual stresses, as well as works on joining and cutting live biological tissues. He was a deputy of the seventh and eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. He has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1972), three Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
