Gedinnian Stage
Gedinnian Stage
(named for the settlement of Gedinne in Belgium), the lowest stage of the lowest series of the Devonian system. It was identified by A. Dumont in 1848. In stratotype it rests transgressively on Cambrian beds; its base is composed of conglomerates, and above it are sandstones, aleurolites, and argillites. The lower half of the cross section is gray in color, and the upper part is variegated. It is divided into the Lower Gedinnian (typical fauna —Warburgella rugulosa Alth., Acastella tiro Richt., Monograptus uniformis PfibyL, and Icriodus woschmidti Liege) and the Upper Gedinnian (typical fauna—-Belgicospis crouchi Lank}. It is spread over Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Morocco, the USA, and Canada. In the USSR it is identified in the Ukraine (the Podol’e region), the Urals, Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Middle Asia.
