Gobi Suite
Gobi Suite
a geological formation discovered in 1892 by V. A. Obruchev. Composed of sedimentary undifferentiated continental Cretaceous or Tertiary deposits, it is located in northern China and the southern and southeastern parts of the Mongolian People’s Republic. It is characterized by red, gray, and greenish clays, sandstones, conglomerates, and marls deposited in the internal enclosed basins that existed in Central Asia during the Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Neocene periods. In Mongolia and northern China, the deposit strata of the Gobi Suite have been discovery sites for the world’s greatest archaeological findings of reptile (dinosaur) and mammal remains. The deposits of the Gobi Suite have been divided into a number of smaller suites and given local names.
