Gangotri

 

a glacier in the Himalayas. Situated on the southern slope of the Zaskar Range, in the upper reaches of the Gangotri River (a left tributary of the Bhagerathi, in the Ganges basin). Gangotri Glacier originates in the vicinity of Badrinath peak (7,188 m) and flows westward. Area, 300 sq km; length, 32 km. The end of the tongue is at a height of 3,900 m. The névé boundary on the main trunk of the glacier is located at a height of 5,150 m; below 5,000 m there is a great deal of morainic material on the surface of the ice.
