Gorlo

in geography. (1) The name of the strait between the Kola Peninsula and the coast of the European mainland, linking the White and Barents seas. The strait of Gorlo is 160 km long and 46–93 km wide. In the north it broadens and merges with the White Sea Voronka. The strait is less than 100 m deep, with a maximum depth of 130 m. Its constant currents flow north with a velocity of about 1 km per hour: it has strong tidal currents. In winter the strait of Gorla is covered with floe ice. Fishing and sealing is carried on in the strait.

(2) In the northern regions, the general name given to a strait connecting a gulf or inland sea with an outer sea.
