Gillin, John P. (Philip)

(1907–73) anthropologist; born in Waterloo, Iowa. He founded the anthropology Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina (1946–59) and the anthropology department at the University of Pittsburgh (1959–72). He directed a pioneering field study of southern American culture (1946), did extensive fieldwork in Central and South America, and contributed to the U.S. government's Latin America policy.
