Gorky Reservoir

a reservoir created between 1955 and 1957 by the dam of the Gorky Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Volga, covering parts of Gorky, Ivanovo, Kostroma, and Yaroslavl oblasts, RSFSR. Area covered, 1,590 sq km; capacity, 8.71 cu km; length (along the Volga) 440 km; maximum width, 14 km.

The Gorky Reservoir is divided into two parts: the lake section (from the dam to the mouth of the Unzha River) and the river section above it. With the creation of a reservoir the waterway between Gorodets and Rybinsk was shortened from 434 to 416 km; the depth is now 365 cm. The towns of Gorodets, Puchezh, Iur’evets, Kineshma, Navoloki, Ples, Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Tutaev, and Rybinsk are located along the banks of the reservoir.
