Georgian Art Museum

(Art Museum of the Georgian SSR), founded in 1933 (called Metekhi until 1952). Located in Tbilisi. Its holdings total nearly 40.000 works of art.

The section on Georgian art and culture contains unique, highly artistic examples of engraving from the sixth to 19th centuries and enamel art from the seventh to 15th centuries (including the Khakhuli hanging icon and the works of Bek and Beshken Opizari), as well as paintings by G. I. Maisuradze, R. N. Gvelesiani, A. L. Beridze, G. I. Ga-bashvili, A. R. Mrevlishvili, Niko Pirosmanashvili, M. I. Toidze, D. N. Kakabadze, L. D. Gudiashvili, E. D. Akhvle-diani, K. K. Magalashvili, and U. M. Dzhaparidze, and the sculpture of Ia. I. Nikoladze, N. P. Kandelaki, V. B. To-puridze, and T. G. Abakeliia. The section on Russian art and culture includes works by D. G. Levitskii, V. A. Tropinin, I. K. Aivazovskii, A. K. Savrasov, V. I. Surikov, A. M. Vasnetsov, V. A. Serov, and M. A. Vrubel’.

The section on the art and culture of Western Europe contains works by the masters of Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, and the section on Soviet art has works by E. E. Lansere, I. E. Grabar’, and A. A. Deineka. A rich collection of works from the art of Iran is in the section on countries of the East.
