Gil Gilbert, Enrique

 

Born July 9, 1912, in Guayaquil; died there, Feb. 21, 1973. Ecuadorian writer. Member of the Communist Party of Ecuador (CPE) from 1932; member of the Central Committee of the CPE from 1946; member of the Executive Committee and Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPE from 1958.

Gil Gilbert taught history at the University of Guayaquil. His works include the short-story collections The Sultry Lowland (1933) and The Narratives of Emmanuel (1939). In the novel Our Bread (1941; Russian translation, 1964) Gil Gilbert exposed the ruthless exploitation of rice-field workers and vividly portrayed life in the South American tropics.
