functional neuroimaging

neuroimaging, functional

Methods used to detect structural abnormalities in the central nervous system and localized brain neural activity in response to performing specific sensory, motor and cognitive tasks. Two common methods are functional MRI (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). These techniques can be used to detect tumours, strokes, focal cerebral lesions, and to map the cortex in healthy individuals. See magnetic resonance imaging; computed tomography; positron emission tomography.
