Gorodechna
Gorodechna
a settled point to the north of Kobrin (Brest Oblast of the Byelorussian SSR) near which, during the Patriotic War of 1812, a battle took place on July 31 (August 12) between the Russian Third Army of General A. P. Tormasov (18,000 men) and the Napoleonic soldiers (the Austrian Corps of K. Shwarzenberg and the Saxon corps of J. L. Reynier with 40.000 men). The Russian command made a timely discovery of the movement of Reynier’s corps against its left flank and threw their main forces against this attack, repulsing it. The attacks of the Austrians, operating from a front across marsh-ridden terrain, were also unsuccessful. The defeat at Gorodechna compelled Shwarzenberg, despite the withdrawal of the Russian troops to Lutsk beyond the Styr’ River, to cease active operations in August and September, which allowed the Russian command to gain time before the arrival of the Moldavian Army in September 1812.
