Gornyi Zhurnal

(Mining Journal), a monthly scientific, technical, and practical journal, one of the oldest in Russia.

The first issue of Gornyi zhurnal appeared in July 1825 under the title Gornyi zhurnal ili sobranie svedenii o gornom i solianom dele, s prisovokupleniem novykh otkrytii po naukam, k semu predmetu otnosiashchimsia (Journal of Mining, or A Compilation of Information on the Mining Business, Including New Discoveries in the Sciences Relating to This Subject). In 1918 the journal’s name was changed to Izvestiia gornogo otdela VSNKh (News of the Mining Department of the Supreme Council on the National Economy); in 1920 and 1921 its title was Gornoe delo (Mining); and in 1922 it reas-sumed its old title, Gornyi Zhurnal. It is an organ of the ministries of ferrous and of nonferrous metallurgy of the USSR and of the central boards of the scientific-technical societies for ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy. It is published in Moscow. Among those on whose initiative the magazine is published are the Russian scientists D. I. Sokolov, P. P. Anosov, V. V. Liubarskii, and I. G. Gavelovskii.

Since 1939, Gornyi zhurnal has concerned itself with problems connected with the development of the mining-extractive industry: the extraction and concentration of ferrous metal ores, nonferrous metal ores, raw materials for the chemical industry, and nonmetallic minerals. The magazine’s circulation in 1971 was 16,500.
