Gorno-Altaisk

 

(before 1932, Ulala; from 1932 to 1948, Oirot-Tura), a city; center of the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Oblast. Altai Krai, RSFSR. Located in the foothills of the Altai Mountains on the Maima River close to its confluence with the Katun’ River. 96 km southeast of the railroad station and landing of Biisk. with which it is connected by a highway. Population. 35.000 (1971). Gorno-Altaisk has a meat combine and factories producing lace curtains, furniture, footwear, fabrics, electrical appliances, carts, and bricks. A pedagogical institute, an engineering technicum, a zootechny and veterinary technicum. a cooperative (trade accounting and planning) technicum, a medical school, a pedagogical school, and the Scientific Research Institute of History and Altaic Language and Literature are located in the city. Gorno-Altaisk was first settled in the early 19th century and became a city in 1928.
